Estimated shipping times

Whilst we endeavour to maintain our usual high standards of service during this time, we do ask customers to be more understanding and flexible. Situations can change rapidly between countries. Your Move Manager or Account Manager will be able to advise you on the current situation with the country you are shipping to. The shipping times we give are estimates and we cannot guarantee that your shipment won’t be subject to delays en route or in customs at your destination country. We also ask customers to ensure that you have the right visa to be allowed entry into your destination country. You should check carefully as many countries have restricted entry at this time, especially for non-citizens.

New procedures for international removals during the Covid-19 pandemic

At PSS, our aim is to ensure that we keep all of our staff and clients safe during the current pandemic. Following guidance from both the Government and the British Association of Removers, we have therefore put a number of new procedures in place. NB: Please be aware that these procedures are subject to change as guidance from the Government and British Association of Removers changes.

What we are doing to protect both you and our staff:

  • Our crews are kept up to date with the best advice from Public Health England and The Health & Safety Executive.
  • In addition, based on this advice, our crews have a set procedure they must follow at the start of their working day, right through to the start of the move and the end of their working day. This procedures includes important measures such as social distancing and the use of Personal Protective Equipment when required, and the use of hand santisers to be used during the removal;
  • The crews are working in restricted teams, so that there are fewer team changes over this period, helping to limit the number of contacts each crew member has;
  • Crew members will advise us immediately if they develop symptoms of Covid-19, or if they have been in contact with anyone who has developed symptoms, and they will then isolate for the recommended period;
  • We will not provide any paperwork at the end of the removal; however, your Move Manager will email these to you as soon as possible following completion of the collection

What we ask of you:

  • Let us know if, in the two weeks prior to your move, you develop any of the symptoms of Covid-19, or if you are in contact with anyone who has developed such symptoms, or if you have been active in the community;
  • There should be only one customer present at the property at the time of the removal.;
  • We need you to clean all surfaces, door handles, stair rails/bannisters before our crew arrive;
  • Please leave all internal doors open for the delivery to reduce the need for contact;
  • Please allow our crew access to a bathroom to allow them to wash their hands regularly throughout the delivery;
  • If possible it would be best if the removal can be done from an empty property, in which case we will need one person to be present at the start of the removal to let the crew in, and at the end of the removal to check the property and to lock up;
  • If someone does remain at the property during the removal, they must not be in the same room as, nor be within 2 metres of, any export packer at any time;
  • During loading of the container or removal vehicle, no-one apart from the crew should be near the house or vehicle at any time
Due to the restrictions we need to have for contact between clients and crew during the day, it is more important than ever to make sure you are ready for your move and we ask that you follow the advice provided in the Check List in your booking confirmation email.

Where In New Zealand Should You Move To? – North or South Island?

which is best north or south island new zealand?

Deciding whether to move to North or South Island in New Zealand from the UK, can be a big dilemma – they both have so much to offer. This PSS guide will help you make the right choice.

The laid back Kiwi lifestyle makes this country one of the top places to live in the world. In fact, New Zealand, along with Australia was recently voted the most desirable place for UK people to migrate to in the PSS National UK Emigration Survey. Whilst migration to New Zealand has temporaily been on pause for most people with the coronavirus pandemic, the signs look good for skilled migration ro resume in 2020 - especially for priority skilled workers. Once you have decided to move to New Zealand the big dilemma you face is which island to choose. In fact, one of the most frequent questions we get at seminars from new UK migrants moving to New Zealand is “Should I move to North Island or South Island, New Zealand?” The decision about where to go will be easier if you have family members or other connections in preferred parts of the country. Being near someone who already knows the place you are moving to can make this life changing event a bit simpler. However, a great thing about moving to New Zealand is that Kiwis will try to do everything they can to make you feel welcome, no matter which part of the country you choose. These two islands are very different in many aspects, but both of them offer plenty of opportunities for working and leisure depending on your desired lifestyle. Another question to ask yourself is – are you a city or a country person? If you are a city person, North Island and its lively atmosphere would suit you better, while for those in love with a country lifestyle, South Island has so much to offer. Here is what you need to know about both islands to make the right decision.

Geographical Area

North Island’s area is 113,729m2 comparing to South Island’s 151.215m2, but out of 5,000,000 people living in the country about 3,814,400 (June 2019) live on North Island  so South Island would be a better destination to move to if you prefer less crowded places. But, compared to the UK, they are both sparsely populated with plenty of outdoor space, so we will have to look at the islands in more detail to see which you are most suited too.

Travelling around

driving-road-south-island All of New Zealand is quite easily accessible by road and air - even small towns have domestic Air New Zealand flights on a regular basis. Other airlines, such as JetStar, mean there is always plenty of choice. There are five international airports – two on the North Island (Auckland and Wellington) and three on the South Island (Christchurch, Dunedin and Queenstown) so travelling back to the UK or making the 3 hour trip to Australia is no problem either way. In addition to air services, New Zealand is well serviced by buses such as ManaBus, which covers North Island, and InterCity and NakedBus which operate nationwide. A part from the urban services in Wellington and Auckland, the railways in New Zealand are more geared towards freight and tourism, which is why they are branded ‘The Great Journeys of New Zealand’. With New Zealand being about the same size as the UK, it is relatively easy to drive around both islands. UK driver’s licences and international driving permits (IDP) are valid for 12 months from when you arrive so this is a good option if you are used to driving around. With New Zealand being left-hand drive, it could even be worth your while shipping your car out from the UK. Speak to PSS’ advisers and they’ll be happy to give you advice and a quote.

The Weather: Warmer North Island or sunnier South Island?

sunny-weather-south-island Due to the country’s diverse landscape, the climate in the North and South Islands is pretty different. As most of the country lies close to the coast the temperatures are mild. North Island is warmer and wetter with subtropical weather on the far north, while as you travel south temperatures decrease. Most of New Zealand has at least 2000 sunshine hours a year compared to just 1500 in the UK. Snow rarely falls in coastal areas, but some parts of alpine area on the South Island can be as cold as –10c in winter. Temperatures are fairly similar to the UK, with North Island highs during summer being around 25 degrees with lows around 12, while on the South Island temperatures go to 22 high with lows of 10 or even less in some parts. People who like higher temperatures and warmer weather, but don’t mind a bit of rain, would prefer living in the north. However, those enjoying more sunshine, but not minding chilly mornings, will find South Island a better place to live.

Big Cities and Small Towns

auckland-north-islandNew Zealand has about 15 official cities (most are located on the North Island) and lots of small, interesting towns, townships, villages and settlements with plenty of character. Compared to busy North Island, cities and lifestyle in the south are more laid back. People in many parts of the South Island feel a long way from the stresses of the city life and that’s probably one of the reasons they are really friendly and welcoming. The biggest and busiest cities on the North Island are Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga and Napier/Hastings - perfect for those who enjoy being part of the bigger crowd. Auckland, with its population of 1.5 million is the biggest city in the country. This is a place where most of the people settle when they first land in New Zealand. There are ample opportunities and it’s pretty easy to find your way around. Known as “the coolest little capital in the world”, Wellington offers all the luxuries of a big city perfectly balanced with a relaxed way of life. Wellington region has a population of over 500,000 and offers a huge diversity of everyday activities. Across the Cook Strait on the South Island, the largest city is Christchurch with a population of about 380,000. The city is still in the process of re-building after a devastating earthquake in 2011. Famous for its culture, Christchurch is a lovely place to consider living in and the weather is great. Further south is Dunedin (120,000), second biggest city on the South Island. Lots of international students are coming to study there as it is considered one of the best places to live in New Zealand for employment and education. Other cities by population are Nelson (65,000) and Invercargill (54,000). In summary, North Island wins for having the biggest cities, but South Island’s towns have plenty of character. queenstown-south-island-new-zealand

Cost of living

coast-of-living-new-zealand The cost of living in New Zealand is considered high and when you consider housing prices, life on the South Island might be cheaper. However, according to payscale.com people earn more on the North Island so this tends to balance things out, especially if you live outside the city centres. If you are renting, utilities are paid on top of your weekly rent. Those include electricity, gas (if you are using it for hot water or cooking) and water – charges depend on how much is used. If you own a car you will need a warrant of fitness for it (the New Zealand equivalent of the MOT) which costs around $50-$80 and if you have an old car you will need to re-do this every 6 months. Prices in supermarkets are similar everywhere in the country, but this depends on what you like to buy and you can always choose between cheaper and more expensive products. Here are some prices of regular shopping basket items in 2020 (source: numbeo.com):

Renting or buying a house?

beautiful-houses-dunedin-south-island Living on the South Island is considered significantly cheaper than living up north. Most new migrants choose to rent a home until they have decided exactly where they would like to settle. The majority of people coming to live in New Zealand end up living in Auckland. The cost of living and housing in the biggest New Zealand city is high, but the wages are also considered higher than in the rest of the country. With many job opportunities available it shouldn’t be a problem to find an affordable place to live in. The rent in Auckland is most expensive with an average cost of around $350 a week for a one bedroom home not so close to the city centre. For the last few years the North Island city of Whanganui has been considered the most affordable place to live in New Zealand. Comparing the prices, rent on the South Island is cheaper. A two-bedroom home in the largest city on the island is around $380 a week and if you decide to go all the way to Invercargill a weekly rent for a two bedroom house is around $250 or cheaper. If planning to buy a house, South Island has undoubtedly cheaper prices. In March 2018 the average value of the housing for the Auckland Region was over $1m while properties in Christchurch have an average value of about $500,000.

Looking for work

job-opportunities-north-south-island Both North and South Island offer plenty of job opportunities to newcomers depending on your skill set. Obviously, if you already have a job offer, this will decide where you move to, but New Zealand has a buoyant economy so there are opportunities everywhere. The main industries in New Zealand are construction, agriculture and tourism, with many jobs openings in IT, medicine and engineering as well. There is a higher chance of finding work on the North Island around the bigger cities such as Auckland, Wellington or Hamilton where you can often find a job pretty quick in lots of different sectors. On the South Island, Christchurch with its peaceful and relaxing lifestyle, is very popular among migrants, with plenty of job opportunities in construction and trades as this city needs a lot people to help in rebuilding. In other parts of the South Island most of the jobs available are in agriculture, manufacturing, recreation, hospitality and tourism. There are jobs on offer in other industries, but a bigger variety can be found on the North Island.

Shopping and Eating Out

cafe-shops-waihehke-island-new-zealand With malls in the biggest cities around the country and outlet stores, craft and food markets available everywhere, shopping in New Zealand is easy. Naturally, bigger cities on both islands have more to offer than small towns but the shopping experience on both islands is pretty good. There are stores in almost every bigger town in which you can buy everything at one place – from food to homeware, clothes, camping gear and sporting equipment. There are four main supermarket chains (Countdown, New World, Pak’nSave and Four Square) which can be found on both islands, and there is no significant difference in food prices across the country. New Zealanders are keen on quality food so you are not short on great cafes or restaurants on either North or South Island.

Outdoor Lifestyle

new-zealand-outdoor-bungee-jumping There’s no better country than New Zealand for those who like spending time outdoors in a safe environment. If you like walking, climbing, surfing, tramping or any kind of outdoors activities you are moving to the right place. New Zealanders are very outdoorsy and always look forward to spending long weekends in nature. The best thing is that both North and South Island offer many different things to do, including city activities and wandering around nature reserves, national parks and walking trails. Also known as City of Sails, Auckland is famous for its vibrant central business district, long sandy beaches and bush walks not far away from the city centre. Some of the highlights in Auckland are Harbour Bridge, Sky Tower, Wynyard Quarter and Auckland Waterfront, Waitakere Ranges for walking enthusiasts on the west, beautiful beaches on the east side and Waiheke Island within a short ferry ride. A huge number of New Zealand’s tourist destinations are located on the North Island. From the Far North Cape Reinga, popular summer destination Tauranga, well known Rotorua with its hot mud pools and thermal hot springs, to Lake Taupo for a quick winter getaway. Surfers will enjoy riding waves in Raglan, adventurers will take on one of the great walks including Tongariro Alpine Crossing and nature lovers will discover all the beauty of the bush walks. On the other hand, South Island is well known across the globe for its fascinating scenery, from the Wynyards in the Marlborough region on the north of the island, Abel Tasman National Park on the west coast, Fiordland National Park where famous Milford Sound is, to unique Stewart Island on the far south. As Stephen Fry recently enthused, “Fiordland, ladies and gentlemen. What a spectacle. Earth destination number one.” Known as the “Adventure Capital of the World”, Queenstown is a magnet for everyone looking to experience some of the best adventure activities. This small town on the South Island is a popular place for people who like skiing, kayaking and climbing.

Find your favourite beach

ninety-mile-beach-north-island Sea temperatures in New Zealand are not really high, but with about 15,000km of coastline it’s not hard to find a place near the sea on the North or South Island. If you like swimming and going to the beach, you will prefer living on warmer North Island where you can enjoy sunbathing on beautiful beaches. Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula, Mt Maunganui Beach near Tauranga, Ninety Mile Beach in Kaitaia, Onetangi Beach on Waiheke Island and many beaches close to Auckland including Mission Bay and Takapuna are just some of the places on the North Island. Even though sea temperatures are lower on the South Island, there are magnificent places to enjoy hot summer days. Beaches in Abel Tasman National Park, Tahunanui Beach in Nelson, Brighton Beach in Dunedin and Curio Bay in Southland region are the places to be.

It’s time for leisure!

People migrating to New Zealand have a chance to enjoy a number of sporting activities as well as plenty of entertainment events around the country. As a family oriented place, New Zealand offers a lot of family friendly activities. The variety of entertainment and leisure activities depends on whether you choose to live in a big city or in a small town in the country. An interesting fact is that even some of the smallest townships have leisure centres with a swimming pool. On both islands, you will be able to choose whether you want to see a movie in a cinema, show at a theatre, or dine out in one of the restaurants or local pubs. Most of the bigger events take place in big cities, so if you would like to see a famous star performing in New Zealand it would probably be in Auckland on the North Island or in Dunedin or Christchurch on the South. New Zealanders like to contribute to the community in any way they can, so the best way for newcomers to meet the locals is to join one of the social and community groups which share their interests. There is also a big camper van culture on New Zealand and this is a great way to go exploring the outdoors on the weekends.

So, Should You Move To North Or South Island?

north or south island new zealand New Zealand is a desirable place to live and there are so many great reasons to make a move including quality of life, scenery, weather, outdoors lifestyle and plenty of jobs for skilled migrants. Those from the UK who like bigger cities, more people, warmer and more pleasant weather will prefer living on the North Island while those looking for a laid back lifestyle, all kind of outdoor activities and less crowded places to raise a family will enjoy their life on the South. But no matter which island you choose to move to, New Zealand offers one of the best qualities of life in the world, so we’re sure you will be delighted, whatever your decision. As New Zealand is not so big, weekend trips to either island are very easy so you can enjoy the best of both islands where ever you live.

New Gallup Survey reveals the countries most accepting towards migrants

Although the world is becoming less welcoming of migrants, countries popular for Brits moving overseas, such as Canada, New Zealand, Australia and USA, are bucking the trend.

This year’s Migrant Acceptance Index poll by Gallup has revealed that, generally, countries around the world are becoming less tolerant and accepting of migrants. The Index has declined from 5.34 in 2016 to 5.21 today. However, the good news for prospective British migrants is that popular countries for skilled migration such as Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the USA rank at the top.

The Gallup Migrant Acceptance Index is a system used to rate a country’s general outlook towards immigration on a scale of 0 to 9, with a higher score reflecting acceptance and positive feelings towards immigration. The value is determined by a survey conducted in 140 + countries, with questions to prompt a response used to gauge the level of openness and acceptance towards immigration in their home country, and categorising these into positive or negative responses.

Although the survey is more geared towards attitudes to migrant refugees than to skilled migrants, it still provides a useful indicator to the world’s changing attitudes.

This year Canada topped the rankings with an impressive 8.46 out of 9, with Iceland, New Zealand and Australia not far behind. Many people were surprised to see the USA in 6th position, which demonstrates that not all American’s share President Trump’s negative attitudes to migrants.

It’s not surprising that the countries will look to skilled migrants to support economic recovery from Covid-19, as occupations with higher paid salaries help boost the economy and also the housing market. Additionally moving abroad (whether that is for a new experience in your bustling 20s or maybe for a job relocation) can really be an eye opener towards new experiences, people, foods and cultures that you otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to experience in your home country that you may already have become accustomed to.

Australia’s Priority Migration programme announced in September earlier this month is one of the most spoken about with regards to an economic recovery plan that involves immigration. This is known as their Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) scheme that gives precedence to a list of 17 highly skilled roles that are considered to be critical occupations with the highest potential to aid economic recovery to Australia from the pandemic. These 17 occupations include a number of roles in different industries, though primarily focused on occupations in construction, healthcare and technology.

Last year, Canada declared their plans to introduce one million new immigrants by 2021 through two of their schemes – this being their federal skilled worker class and provincial nominee programmes which take into account both highly skilled and lower-skilled workers, with the intention to boost economic growth as well as to combat their ageing population. Immigration has always been largely responsible for the majority of Canada’s population growth (a substantial 75%), who have historically always strived to provide more work opportunities and permanent citizenship to migrants coming from all over the world. Even Covid-19 won’t change this, with Canada announcing their Immigration Level plans over the next 2 years despite being in the midst of the pandemic.

Though the year 2020 has been relatively challenging in almost all aspects, and particularly so for travelling plans or relocating abroad with stricter border controls, we would recommend keeping an eye out for new immigration programmes that may start being introduced, since it’s looking positive for a fair few number of countries like those listed above who recognise the potential of migrants supporting their country’s economic recovery.

Though it’s difficult to predict when exactly, we are feeling confident about migration policies becoming less strict, especially for countries like Canada, Australia and Europe generally. So hold onto those plans for a re-visit in the near future and bring on 2021!

7 Quotes To Inspire You To Get Started On Your Dream Move Today!

With international travel so disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic and many countries places restictions on entry for new migrants, it can be a dispiriting time for those with the dream of moving to a new country and starting a new life overseas.

Even more so since many people have taken the opportunity of lockdown to reflect on their life choice and many have committed to making that big move.

But there is hope on the horizon. Most European countries are open for migrants, other countries are beginning to open for priority occupations and most countries are planning to increase igration as a way to help boost their economies. In fact, we have seen a huge increase in enquiries for our international removal service.

So don’t despair, start planning your move and building your vision for a future in your new country.

In the meantime, here are some positive quotes that will motivate and inspire you to get started on making your dream move overseas a reality.

Most importantly get started today!

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.  Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”  – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Yes, the first step is to get started. Be bold, start taking action and see where it leads you.

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”  – Robert Frost

Most people are content to dream about moving but never take action and live to regret what might have been. Don’t make this mistake – take the less travelled road!

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” – Chinese Proverb

Sometimes visas can take time to apply for, so the sooner you start, the sooner you can be enjoying your new life in your new country.

Do you frequently talk about your dream move to your friends and family but not much else? Then take this advice from Walt Disney:

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” – Walt Disney

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” – Arthur Ashe

Making the move overseas can seem overwhelming. But take it step by step and you’ll be there faster than you would have imagined.

“Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right.’ Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.” — George Herbert

Everything doesn’t need to be perfect, but give our team a call and we’ll be happy to recommend the ‘tools’ and migration partners than can make your journey as smooth as possible.

Lastly one of our favourites:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do, so throw off the bowlines, sail away from safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.” —Mark Twain

Don’t live in regret. Set sail this year and PSS will be with you every step of the way!

So what are you waiting for? Click here to make an online enquiry or call us on 020 8686 7733 and we will be happy to get you started on your move overseas!

Why not live in Spain? Thousands of Brits have not been put off by Brexit and are currently migrating to enjoy the benefits of living in Spain.

Is now a good time to move to Spain? Many British still think so and it will take a lot more than Brexit to put them off their dream of living in the sun.

Whilst there have been some reports of Brits returning from Spain, most are still remaining and thousands more are joining them every year. Whilst Spain reports around 300,000 British registered to live in Spain, the BBC reports the actual number at 760,000.

At PSS International Removals we have actually seen the number of enquiries about moving to Spain increase by over 250% since the Brexit referendum. Whilst there is a rush to move to Spain before the end of the transition period, many more Brits are still planning too buy property and move to Spain in 2021 and beyond.

So why do so many people want move to Spain?

There are so many reasons but the benefits are clear and there’s never been a better time to move to Spain. There may be uncertainties surrounding Brexit but what is certain is that Brits will always enjoy the sun, sea and culture of Spain.

This is a country which is offering some of the most important and desirable lifestyle changes which emigrating Brits are searching for. Our list is clear and the first in our list is without a doubt among the top reasons to move to Spain! The HSBC Expat Explorer Survey which has been in existence for 12 years and which gathers data from thousands of expats all over the world couldn’t have put things more clearly and has this year listed Spain as far ahead of the UK in many aspects. Spain ranks ahead of the UK in the following;

      • Work/life balance
      • Healthcare
      • Safety
      • Quality of life
      • Social life

Overall Spain ranks 4th in the world and UK 27th. Check the survey yourself here HSBC Expat Explorer Survey and see for yourself the advantages Spain offers.

It’s an undeniable factor in anyone making a list of all the most valid reasons to move to Spain. The weather is gorgeous. Hot and sunny in the summertime and soft and gentle during the spring and autumn months, it’s a real draw for anyone who wants to experience a relaxed, outdoor lifestyle.

4. Community

The Spanish are well-known for their high regard for all things community-based. This stems from their commitment for all things family-related and they understand the importance of strong community bonds. This means that people taking the plunge and choosing to relocate to Spain will find that they are welcomed with open arms.

People make an effort to get to know newcomers and as far as your wellbeing is concerned, there’s not much more life affirming than the knowledge you live in a community which cares about you. Add this to your reasons to retire in Spain list! It’s a well-known fact that living as part of a close community improves quality of life and health!

5. Great work prospects

Barcelona job and business opportunities

HSBC’s Expat Explorer Survey also revealed some telling figures regarding employment among expats living in Spain with 88% of expats living in Spain being in employment compared to only 78% of expats in general. Looking to move to Spain from the UK can seriously improve your job prospects as well as your lifestyle.

Spain is also very popular with British expats setting up their own business. No matter whether you’re a café owner or tradesperson serving other expats and holiday makers or starting a new online venture, Spain could be the perfect location.

6. Amazing property opportunities

seaside properties in Spain

Spain is a large country and with much of it boasting a year-round warm climate, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing somewhere to live.

The architecture is a mix of older, slightly chocolate-box properties and new-build apartments. Depending on your needs, you will find a lot of choice in terms of both property type and cost. It’s generally understood though that you can get much more for your money in Spain than you can in the UK.

Organising a mortgage in Spain is a very similar process to that in the UK so there are no frighteningly foreign rules and regulations to get around. Of all the reasons to live in Spain, this is a big one because for many people, the knowledge that they will be able to find a home they love and can afford, brings real peace of mind.

The wide choice of property in Spain is impressive; from neat and affordable apartments to sprawling, rural retreats and everything in between, you’re sure to find the perfect home for your new life in Spain.

If you would like to find out about what properties are currently available, we recommend checking out Unique Homes Spain. They have property available for every style and budget from traditional Fincas with land  to contemporary new build villas and apartments – you’ll be amazed at how far your budget can go!

7. Quality of life

The effects of living in an environment which is not only warm and sunny but also breathtakingly beautiful, aren’t to be taken lightly. Spain is a truly stunning country from its golden beaches to its heart-stopping mountain vistas, you can walk in genuine wilderness here and yet still be close to town. The freedom and lack of constraints in terms of space make Spain a great place to live.

8. It’s great for children

Children in Spain are blessed with the most astounding playground ever in that the beaches, hills, forests and historical towns are theirs to enjoy. The Spanish attitude towards children is warm and accepting.

You won’t find much judgement here when it comes to free-range kids! In terms of education, there are a wide range of schools and a large number of British schools in Spain which follow the British style of teaching and teach in English. For more details about British schools in Spain, look at the website of The National Association of British Schools in Spain

9. Retirement in Spain is magical

According to the many thousands of Brits who’ve made the move, the lifestyle and degree of security in Spain far surpasses that to be found in the UK. Healthcare in Spain is among the best in Europe and the low-cost of small houses and apartments is a big draw.

You needn’t worry about being too far from your loved-ones either. With affordable flights and excellent travel deals available, your friends and relatives can share in your new home!

10. You’ll possibly live longer

That’s a good reason to seriously consider making a move to Spain! The average lifespan of a resident of Spain is currently 83.38 years whilst that of a British resident is 81.60.

And it’s no wonder when you have all the advantages of fresh air, sun, sea, great food and less stress.

11. The Siesta

living in Spain siesta

The siesta is a Spanish tradition which has refused to go away even as the country has grown and become faster paced over the years. Taking a short nap at the hottest point of the day is a sensible move and a very pleasant one!

Most people find that the generally slower pace of life in Spain is very agreeable once they make the adjustment. Shops in Spain will typically close between 2.00pm and 5.00pm, giving everyone a chance to take a break.

12. The Mediterranean diet

The amazing food which you’ll discover in Spain is a big part of why the people of Spain are in general healthier than in many other parts of the world. Rich in good quality fruit and vegetables, oils and fish, most people remark on the fact that food here is eaten seasonally, meaning that it’s far fresher than in other countries.

13. Spain’s incredibly rich history

history and culture in Spain

Spain is culturally one of the most fascinating countries in the world. With a rich and chequered history, culture enthusiasts will find plenty to interest them in Spain including mediaeval buildings and quaint, walled villages.

14. Markets

spanish market

Spanish markets are amazing: there are wonderful markets all over Spain, it’s a real tradition and most towns and even smaller villages have their weekly markets where visitors can purchase produce, handmade crafts and gifts. Leather is particularly popular in Spain as there is a long tradition of extremely fine workmanship.

15. World-famous nightlife

night life living in Spain

Nightclubs are a big part of how the Spanish make their living. Not all towns are full of party animals but those that are really know how to do it.

Once Ibiza put Spain on the map in the 1980s as the party capital of the world there was no looking back, and many thousands of visitors flock to certain parts of Spain all year round to enjoy the world-class DJ’s and nightlife.

16. Beaches like you’ve never seen

Mallorca Bay beach

We’re not just talking about those popular holiday destinations here but also those hidden, little-known gems which are often well-kept local secrets.

We’re talking about beaches like Cala Pregonda in Menorca where the beautiful, long and golden beach is protected by pink rocks which stud the area and add an air of mystery to the spot.

Or the turquoise waters of Cala Llombards in Majorca where children can play safely in warm, shallow waters and adults can snorkel or enjoy the relaxing sound of the ocean in one of Europe’s most stunning spots.

17. Small-town Spanish life

British expats in small town Spanish cafe

As one happy expat puts it, “everyone is equal here, the local millionaire drinks coffee in the cafe alongside the town window cleaner and everyone gets along.”

Residents of rural Spain in particular enjoy a special kind of old-fashioned and simple lifestyle which in many cases hasn’t really changed for hundreds of years. Because some of these towns are a little remote, they are very supportive and very self-sufficient.

18. Moving to Spain from the UK is easy!

removals van to Spain

As so many Brits make the move to Spain each year, the whole process is very easy. There is a whole industry of experts ready to provide advice in English to make your move as smooth and stress free as possible. These include UK real esate agents in Spain, conveyancing and property solicitors and of course international removals from UK to Spain!

19. Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn

learning Spanish

Spanish is known to be one of the simplest European languages to learn as well as one of the most beautiful sounding!

Whilst the grammar and sentence structure might be different, they both have their roots in Latin and share thousands of ‘cognates’, words that sound the same and have the same meaning. Some examples are ‘academic’ and ‘academico’ and ‘domestic’ and ‘domestico’.

This makes getting by much, much easier and as Spanish people are so forgiving and encouraging, you’ll find it a joy to try out your new language skills – no matter how basic!

20. Cheaper day-to-day living costs

Spanish city living

It’s long been a well-known fact that the cost of living in Spain is cheaper than in the UK. Nothing has changed and current figures state that the general cost of living in Spain is cheaper by as much as 18.2% when compared to the UK and rent costs are 33.19% lower in Spain than in the UK.

That’s a big saving no matter how you look at it. Freeing up almost half of what you’d usually spend on rent is a real opportunity. That’s the sort of money which makes a difference in a life…perhaps affording the opportunity to start a business or to take more holidays!

21. Spanish People

friendly and welcoming Spanish family

The Spanish are known for their warmth, their humour, their generosity and their love of a good time. There’s no pretension and a welcome is always on offer if you’re looking for one. In other words, you can expect to be greeted with kindness when you arrive in your new Spanish home and you needn’t worry about making friends either. The Spanish are well-known for their love of socialising and if you’re open and friendly, then your neighbours will also be open and friendly!

22. A Vibrant British Expat Community

British expats in Spain

Over 300,000 British Expats have already moved to Spain and millions of British tourists (18.8 million in 2017) visit Spain every year.

You therefore don’t have to go far to find home comforts and English voices. So no matter whether it’s fish and chips, Costa Coffee or your local pub, you’ll find them all in Spain.

And if you are feeling homesick and want to escape the Spanish sun then the UK is only a short, cheap flight way so you can easily pop back and show off your sun tan!

Here’s five more reasons to move to Spain from Kamrun -a UK migrant whose done it and is now living the dream!

    23. Brexit – A great reason to move to Spain this year

The British love affair with sunny Spain has lasted hundreds of years and there is no way Brexit is going to change that! In fact, if you’re fed up with all the non-stop Brexit debate and speculation then there has never been a better time to relocate.

Also Spain welcomes migrants and property buyers from outside the EU, so migrating to Spain even after the UK leaves the EU will still likely be very achievable.

But with all these benefits of living in Spain, why wait?

Australia’s Most Wanted: The Most In Demand Jobs for Skilled Migration To Australia 2020-2021 (Updated)

We reveal the top 50 occupations on the Skilled Occupation Shortage List that give you the best chance of getting a PR visa invitation for migrating to Australia.

Getting a skilled migration visa for Australia has never been more challenging. The number of visas issued has been reduced, processing times are slower and UK migrants are facing increasing competition from countries such as India and China. Add to that the disruption from the coronavirus epidemic and it may seem an insurmountable challenge.

However, thousands of people do successfully migrate from the UK to Australia every year and there are still many places available for people with the right skills. So your dream of starting a new life down under is still very achievable – especially if your experience is needed.

We have compiled an updated list of the top 50 jobs most in demand for migrants in Australia for 2020-2021, based on the recently released Occupation Ceilings for the Skilled Migration Shortage List.

    Moving to Australia for work

There has always been an attraction for non-Australian residents looking to work there. A lot of that has to do with the lifestyle, the salary and, obviously, the stunning weather. Australia has always had a clear and fair policy on immigration and welcomes migrant workers, so if you are planning a move down under and meet the criteria, you’ll feel more than accepted.

Whilst international travel is currently suspended to Australia, many migrants and job seekers are beginning the application process now in preparation for when the borders re-open – likely sometime in 2021.

In fact, there are thousands of migrant workers who try to apply for a working visa in Australia every year. The best way you can secure employment and a work-based visa, is through the Australian Skilled Migration program. This applies to the occupations listed in the Skilled Occupations List (SOL).

The list is updated regularly by the DoHA and there are at present over 200 occupations on there. This list governs the areas where migrant skilled workers are most sought after in the country, so you can see if your skills are in demand in the Land of Oz.

Although there are a high number of UK migrant workers in the country, it’s important to remember that the list is not just for the UK, but for all over the world. Before we go any further and discuss some of the occupations and industries where there is the most demand for migrant workers, it may be worth explaining what is exactly meant by the term ‘occupation ceilings’, as it’s likely to be unfamiliar to many.

    What are Occupation Ceilings?

There is a restriction on the amount of Expression of Interest (EOI) or invites that will be issued by the Australian Government for a particular occupation group. This is what is referred to as the occupation ceilings.

They are basically set to make sure there’s not just a small number of different occupations making up the biggest percentage of the program for skilled migrant workers. Once the cited limit has been met, there will be no additional invitations for the occupation group in question until the next year.

It means that even the lower ranking occupation groups will be able to offer prospective migrants an invitation to work in the country. As the occupation ceilings have been released for 2020-2021, you may be curious to know which jobs are most in demand in Australia for migrant workers.

Although the list below shows the top 50 occupations in terms of volume of invitations, other highly skilled jobs may have less applicants so you still could have a good chance.

As you can see, there is a wide range of jobs covering every sector you can imagine so, if you are planning your move to Australia in the next year or so, there’s really no limit to the types of professions being accepted – and of course these change year to year.

Even with the reduction in numbers from 2019 (probably due to the coronavirus epidemic), there are still many places and occupations available. Australia needs to kick start their economy and return to economic growth. Many experts believe that inviting migrants to fill skill shortages is one of the best ways to do this.

If you have a certain qualification that is not in demand, then with a top up or booster course you could change your skill level and become eligible to apply for one of the jobs on the list.

For example, if you are a primary school teacher in the UK, you may be able to access a Train to Teach course which will provide you with the needed Qualified Teacher Status to teach secondary school children, a high demand occupation.

Now we’ve looked at the full list for 2020-2021, we’ll run down the top 10 jobs in demand down under and see how you could be setting up your new life in Australia via one of these access routes.

The Top Occupations In Demand in Australia 2020-2021

    Nurses and Medical Staff

There are a lot of different factors that come into play and mean that Australia is a suitable destination for any registered nurse or other medical staff looking for somewhere to move to and work. Due to it being a growing industry coupled with the fact that there are quite a number of nurses and medical employees who will be reaching retirement age soon, there is an increased demand for nurses, giving high occupational ceilings for roles in this sector.

The health care industry overall has had the biggest increase and growth in 5 years, and this is expected to continue through to 2022. The occupations in this industry that are the most in demand are registered nurses, disabled and aged carers, personal care workers, receptionists and nursing support.

    Software Programmer and IT

There is currently a growing and critical need within the tech industry for software developers of various abilities, such as those experienced in user experience, mobile and back-end design, front end and full stack developers. In fact, according to a report from last year,  9 of the most advertised jobs out of a list of 15 were for UI/UE designers, software engineers and developers.

    Trades and Construction

Given that the construction industry always has a demand, especially for technicians and trade workers such as electricians, carpenters, joiners and plumbers, it’s not surprising that these rank so highly on the most in demand list of professions. There has also been a demand for non-skilled labourers too. So, if you are experienced in this kind of work, you will have an easier time getting work.

    Teachers

Although in the past there was a huge demand for migrant primary school teachers in Australia, that has changed in recent years. There are still options for migrants looking to work in teaching though, particularly in secondary schools in more regional parts of the country. That is why it still ranks so highly in the occupational ceilings list.

It is even the case that many qualified teachers from Australia need to go out to the regional parts of the country for their first employer. Within this group, the least in demand is undoubtedly inner city female primary school teachers.

    White Collar Management/Professionals

Just as is the case with software developers, there is a growing demand for various white-collar management and professional positions. Including the likes of those involved in marketing, advertising and accounting. Therefore, if you have experience and qualifications in these kinds of positions, you are likely to find it easier landing a job.

Migration has always favoured skilled workers in Australia, so if you have a management or professional role  or skill involved in this area, you are in good standing for employment.

    Automotive and Engineering Trades Workers

Motor mechanics are in demand all across Australia and if you are in a specialist area such as automotive electrician, automatic transmission mechanic, automotive air-conditioning mechanic or brake mechanic, even better.

This category also includes other trades such as metal machinists, sheet metal workers, panel beaters, welders, fitters and metal fabricators, although demand for particular specialisations varies across different Australian states.

    Engineers

Although it may not feature as highly in the list of the industry and professions with the most demand for migrant workers, there is still huge demand for skilled and qualified engineers of all kinds.

This includes mechanical, industrial, electronics, transport and electrical engineers.

    Farmers

Whilst, like many Western countries, Australia has a demand for temporary farm labourers to help with mundane tasks such as crop picking, there are also many opportunities for more highly skilled agricultural workers.

No matter whether you’re a dairy or mixed crop farmer you’ll find farming on an unimaginable scale in Australia with good salaries to match.

However, this year the number of livestock farmers on the list has been cut from 5934 in 2019 to 0. It is in fact the only job category to be removed from the list so we are wondering whether is an administrative error as farmers and agricultural workers are still needed in Australia.

Other occupations on the skilled migration list 2020-2021

In total there are over 200 occupations listed on the Skilled Migration list, including some specialist jobs with low ceilings where you may still have a good chance of being accepted if you have the right specialist skills and there are fewer people applying.

How to get a visa if your occupation is not on the list

Before you submit your Expression of Interest form it is very important that you do your research and seek advice from experts. Our article on How to make a successful EOI application on Skillselect will help you get started. It also provides contact details for reliable registered MARA visa agents.

Don’t despair if your role is not on the most wanted list or if you don’t receive an invitation.

These occupation ceilings do not apply to State or Territory Nominated, Employer Sponsored or Business Innovation and Investment visa subclasses. So don’t panic if your job is not on the list – there may be other options available.

The best route to getting a visa is being sponsored by an employer. The Employer Nomination Scheme visa lets skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, live and work in Australia permanently. If you have a job offer it greatly increases your chances of success.

PSS International Removals are in touch with a number of employers and recruiters actively looking to find skilled workers in the UK looking to move either to Australia or elsewhere in the world.

If you would like us to put you in touch, then complete this form on our website detailing your skills and requirements. We will then forward your details in confidence and we take no payment for this service.
